As a seed-stage investor, Mercury believes the role of the venture capitalist is to help nurture entrepreneurs, build management teams, and work closely with them to fully develop their business models and go-to-market strategies.
Lean Startup Attributes
We look for companies that can be run with the “lean startup” strategy – small, nimble teams launching startups in a capital efficient manner. We have found that these lean startup methodologies, developed for software-based startups, can also be applied to science-based startups. As such, our Fund actively seeks out opportunities to fund small scientific teams with great ideas looking for proof-of-concept funding, in addition to entrepreneurs building software-based businesses.
We look for three key attributes in a potential investment:
- Founders with extraordinary technical talent and/or market insights
- Capital efficient business models
- Startups with the ability to address large markets with a disruptive performance increase or cost decrease
Investment Stage & Size
Mercury’s sole focus is seed and early-stage venture investing. We initially invest between $50,000 to $1.5 million into an opportunity and will build syndicates for investments needing larger amounts of capital. We almost always lead or co-lead the first round of investment, and expect to invest between $4 million and $6 million over the life of a company.
